Family storytelling is honest, emotive and a focus on connection. The connection of you and your family being YOU. Your authentic selves. Just being in the moment. Storytelling moves away from traditional portraiture. Forget about that looking at the camera nonsense. The way you will get the best out of your session is to be fully present in the moment. Connect with your children through touch, play and being in the moment and I will be there to photograph the beauty of the inbetween moments. That's where your story is. In those moments of you and your family just being together.
How can you get the best out of your family storytelling photoshoot?
Be present in the moment. Forget about checking the time or checking your phone. Forget about work or bedtime routine. Be fully present and enjoy this moment of playing and connecting with your loved ones. Your photoshoot is more than just having the photos, it's an experience and time creating memories and moments to remember together.
Choose a place or location you and your family love for your photoshoot. Having a familiar location for your session will help everyone feel relaxed. If your children love the sea and sand, choose your fave beach to hang out at. If you love exploring the trees and a woodland, choose a location like that. If you have children who love water and paddling in the sea, that is perfect for a playful and storytelling photoshoot.
Let go of expectations. Children can be unpredictable. Your child does not need to be super happy, smiley and well behaved for your session. Let children be. It's about embracing the moment. Going with the flow. Their quirks, personalities, emotions is what makes them. We want to remember them being them right? Let children be children, all here for that.
There is a few ways you can prepare for your photoshoot. Bring snacks for your little ones. All the running around and excitement, snacks can be handy for a 5 min break. Bring a spare set of clothes for the younger ones, particularly if they will be playing in the sea/sand. They may want a clean change of clothes for after their session. Bring some props/activity if you wish. Think bucket and spade, a football, a kite, toy cars/comfort toy. This is optional, as being out in nature makes for some great storytelling natural sessions.
Look and connect with your children and partner/wife/husband. The one thing I don't want any of you to do is focus on the camera or be constantly looking at me. Forget about the camera, just forget about that you're having a photoshoot and be fully invested in engaging and connecting with your family. This is how you will get the most out of your session and those honest, emotive and storytelling photos you want.
